NHLIB: The Future of Hockey Cards?

August 26, 2009

One writer thinks so…

Hockey cards have had a rich history over the past 100 years, and since the lockout in 2004, a new-found value has been placed on collector items such as cigarette pack cards, the legendary cards like the Wayne Gretzky rookie and even the new era of Hockey game cards with the Ice Breaker brand. Collectors might find there is a goldmine in that old shoe box in the attic.

Significance
Collecting hockey cards has played a significant part in helping fans familiarize themselves with the sport. The backs of the cards contain a lot of information, from scoring statistics to which players are the best golfers. In the early years, hockey cards were not seen as collectors items, so one could have a Bobby Orr or Wayne Gretzky, card mixed in with the lesser known players…

The Future of Hockey Cards
The future of hockey cards can be seen in the new NHL Ice Breaker card board game. These games are centered on the basic premise of a 52-game deck but with a hockey card collector theme.

About.com – 2008 World Boardgaming Championships

August 12, 2008

Here’s a snip of Erik Arneson’s trip to the 2008 World Boardgaming Championships.

The 2008 World Boardgaming Championships concluded yesterday, ending a weeklong event attended by about 1,500 gamers and featuring more than 100 tournaments. I’ve never been a big tournament player, and this year I only entered one: Football Strategy, a game most recently published in 1980 by Avalon Hill. In Football Strategy, the player on defense selects his formation (one of 10 possibilities) using a deck of cards, and then the offensive player announces his play selection (one of 20). The defender reveals his card and the players consult a chart to see what the outcome is. I played four games, finishing with a 2-2 record. All four games were dramatic, determined by a touchdown or less (20-14, 17-23, 13-8, 10-17). I’d rather play Pizza Box Football or Card Football, but I’m glad I had the chance to try Football Strategy…

(PDR) Sincere apologies to anyone that has checked this out recently, as this is the first new posting in 3 months! That’s bad. Well, suffice to say we’ve had more important things on the go the last few months – 90% of which has been good things.

For those of you on pins and needles about how the Chiefs did in the OBA’s, well, we were eliminated after 3 games. Too bad, ’cause there’s no question in my mind that we were the best team in the tournament. Just didn’t play to our potential, I guess. Maybe we peaked a little early, what with the tournament victory in July. The rest of the COBA season wasn’t much better. Got knocked out in the first round best-of-three. One-two-barbecue, as Fab likes to say.

Hockey season is off and running and our Sens are looking real good – again. Looks like they’ve barely missed a beat following the disappointing loss in the Stanley Cup Finals. No SCF hangover here. Our goalie Martin Gerber (previously known as “Martin Gerbeerleague”) looks like a new man. With he and Ray Emery between the pipes, the Sens just might have the best goaltending tandem in the league.

We’re looking forward to making some big announcements over the next couple months. Can’t wait to fill you in.

(PDR) Our baseball team, the nearly-world-famous Dundas Chiefs, came out as winners of the 1st annual Bruno Leblanc Memorial Tournament in Niagara Falls this past weekend. Fab threw a complete game shutout in a 9-0 semi-final win. Yours truly finished the tournament 1 for 2 with a walk and a couple RBI. Great group of guys on this team. Looking forward to the rest of the season and the Ontario Baseball Assocation playdowns — that, and a little more playing time )
